Tradition and Triumph at Kırkpınar
For over six centuries, the Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival in Edirne has stood as a living testament to Türkiye’s deep cultural heritage—a stage where strength meets ritual, and history is written in sweat and earth. The 664th edition of this ancient spectacle concluded with an electrifying finale, as Orhan Okulu defeated Feyzullah Aktürk to claim the coveted golden belt and the title of Başpehlivan (Chief Wrestler).

Set in the storied Sarayiçi Er Meydanı, the festival drew over 800 wrestlers, from young hopefuls to seasoned champions, competing across 14 categories. The tournament’s climactic moment arrived as Okulu, known for his relentless fighting spirit, squared off against the rising star Aktürk in a match that kept the crowd on edge.
Before the match, the arena stood in solemn silence for a moment of respect, honoring fallen soldiers from the Pençe-Kilit Operation. The crowd’s thunderous chants of “Şehitler ölmez, vatan bölünmez (Our martyrs live on; our nation will never be divided) echoed through the stands, adding emotional gravity to the event.

Orhan Okulu’s Triumph
In a gripping battle under the Anatolian sun, Okulu’s experience and strategy overcame Aktürk’s youthful vigor. The Antalya-born wrestler, already a Kırkpınar champion in 2015 and 2018, regained his place at the top of Türkiye’s most prestigious wrestling stage.
As tradition dictates, Okulu later visited Edirne’s historic hamam (bathhouse) to cleanse the oil and celebrate his victory—a ritual symbolizing renewal and respect for the sport’s enduring customs.
“This belt is not just a victory for me, but for my family, my mentors, and all those who stood by me on this journey,” Okulu shared, dedicating his win to his father, who first introduced him to wrestling.

More Than a Sport, A Heritage
Kırkpınar is not merely a competition; it is a festival of Turkish identity. From ceremonial salavat (blessings) to the thunderous drums and zurnas that accompany each match, the event pulses with centuries of tradition. And with efforts to modernize the sport through the new Oil Wrestling League, this legacy now embraces a new era of structure and global attention.
As Türkiye continues to expand oil wrestling’s reach—hosting matches abroad in Germany, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia—the world is invited to witness not only a sport but a cultural phenomenon that has stood the test of time.
The 664th Kırkpınar ends with a powerful message: on the field of honor, every victory carries the weight of history.
