Running Through History

The 10th Gallipoli Marathon Unites the World on Sacred Ground

On a sunlit autumn morning, thousands of runners from 27 nations gathered where history was written in fire and courage. The 10th Gelibolu (Gallipoli) Marathon, held on Türkiye’s storied Gallipoli Peninsula, transformed a historic battlefield into a living bridge between past and present—where each step echoes the resilience, sacrifice, and shared humanity of generations.

Under the slogan “Running Shoulder to Shoulder for 10 Years,” approximately 3,500 participants took part across four categories—Marathon (42K), Half Marathon (21K), 10K, and the emotionally resonant 1915 Tribute Run, dedicated to honoring the fallen soldiers of the Gallipoli Campaign. As the starting horn sounded by Kilitbahir Castle, runners surged forward between the Aegean Sea and centuries-old fortifications, immersed in one of the most breathtaking marathon routes on Earth.

A Route Steeped in Memory

Unlike any other marathon, Gallipoli’s course winds through landscapes that once witnessed fierce battles, now blanketed in green forests and serenity. The 1915 Tribute Run stood as the emotional heart of the event: amateur athletes, families, and international guests ran together not for personal bests, but to commemorate the heroes of the past. At the finish, every participant received a commemorative medal—a quiet symbol of remembrance and peace.

A Festival of Sport, Family, and Heritage

The marathon weekend began with Children’s Races held at Anadolu Hamidiye Bastion, where 500 young runners filled the historic grounds with laughter and determination. A specially designed athletics and play zone welcomed children aged 4 and above, introducing the next generation to the joy of movement through interactive games, sprint tracks, and reaction drills.

Families enjoyed a vibrant festival atmosphere with horseback gendarmerie patrols, photo areas, and sweeping views of the Dardanelles—creating memories that blended sport, culture, and nature.

Just a day earlier, storms swept across the peninsula. But on race day, the sky cleared to brilliant sunshine, as if history itself had prepared the stage. At the finish line, steaming soups, yogurt, ayran, and dried fruits—staples of traditional Turkish hospitality—welcomed tired runners, offering nourishment that was as heartfelt as it was healthy.

More Than a Race

The Gelibolu Marathon is not simply an athletic competition. It is a journey through time, a celebration of peace, and a living invitation to the world. As Çanakkale Historical Area President İsmail Kaşdemir put it: “Çanakkale brings people together. On these lands where war once raged, today there is peace, serenity, and remembrance. Everyone who runs here not only honors our heroes but remembers how this nation was built.”

For runners, families, and travelers alike, the Gelibolu Marathon offers more than miles—it offers meaning. It’s where sport and history intertwine, where the Aegean wind carries both stories and strides, and where every step becomes part of something timeless.
