700 Runners Sign Up Early
High above the Black Sea coast, where mist curls through alpine meadows and centuries-old trails crisscross lush green valleys, Türkiye is preparing to make global headlines once again—this time in the world of mountain endurance sports.
At a spirited press event held on the Ayder Plateau in Rize’s Çamlıhemşin district, Youth and Sports Minister Osman Aşkın Bak officially launched preparations for Kaçkar by UTMB, the Türkiye stage of the world’s most renowned trail running series. With its dramatic peaks, untouched wilderness, and rich cultural heritage, the Kaçkar range is poised to become a new epicenter for global mountain tourism.

“We want the world to discover this natural paradise,” Minister Bak declared. “Our vision is to introduce not just a race, but an experience—one where athletes and visitors alike connect with nature, with culture, and with themselves.”
Set to debut in September 2025, the event will offer runners challenging routes through Kaçkar’s dramatic terrain—ranging from 7 km to a full 100 km ultramarathon. Early interest is already strong: over 700 participants from 30 countries have signed up.

More than a race, Kaçkar by UTMB is part of a broader strategy to elevate Rize’s role in international nature tourism. With a modern airport just 45 minutes away and growing accommodation capacity, the region is ready to welcome the world. Yet, as Minister Bak emphasized, the true goal is long-term sustainability: “We want tourism, yes—but in harmony with nature.”
As local leaders joined hands and danced the traditional horon to the sound of the tulum, the message was clear: this is more than an athletic event. It’s a celebration of identity, heritage, and shared responsibility. The trails of Kaçkar belong to everyone—but protecting them starts here.
