Anastasia Potapova wins maiden title in Istanbul
TEB BNP Paribas Tennis Championship Istanbul came to an end with the final matches played on Sunday, 24 April. While Anastasia Potapova won the singles title, Marie Bouzkova/Sara Sorribes Tormo were crowned in the doubles.
In the singles final, qualifier Anastasia Potapova faced seed no. 3 Veronika Kudermetova. 25-year-old Kudermetova, who was a semifinalist last year in Istanbul, was the better player at the beginning of the game. Despite gaining the break advantage in the third game, she could not manage to maintain her high level. After falling behind 3-1, Potapova won 5 games in a row to clinch the set 6-3.
21-year-old Potapova’s fine form continued in the second set. With a quick double break, she took the early lead 3-0. Despite Kudermetova’s comeback efforts, Potapova did not lose the control and finished the set 6-1.
Potapova, who played her first final in Istanbul after nearly four years, won the first title of her career in Turkey. Expressing that she was very happy with her first victory, Potapova stated that she hopes to maintain her good form in Istanbul during the remainder of the year.
Bouzkova/Sorribes Tormo’s doubles victory
On the other hand, Marie Bouzkova/Sara Sorribes Tormo won the doubles title. Seed no. 3 Bouzkova/ Sorribes Tormo beat Natela Dzalamidze/Kamilla Rakhimova 6-3, 6-4 in the final and were crowned as doubles champions at the TEB BNP Paribas Tennis Championship Istanbul. The Czech-Spanish duo did not drop a set all week.
Until the seventh game of the match, both teams performed well and it was back and forth between the two sides of the net. Bouzkova/Sorribes Tormo managed to break in the eighth and closed the set 6-3.
There were four breaks in the first five games of the second set. Thanks to a good communication between two best friends, which led them to the final, Bouzkova/Sorribes Tormo won the set 6-4.
25-year-old Sara Sorribes Tormo and Czech Marie Bouzkova both achieved their third WTA doubles titles of their career, but first trophy together.
